Hooded Crane is one of the least known large birds in the world, a member of the family of cranes. In Japan/Korea/China cranes are symbol of longevity, peace and love, rich in cultural and spiritual values, omnipresent in art works.
Key facts:
- 300 reserves have been created in the Amur-Heilong river basin. 80% of these remain "paper parks", protected by laws for which there are no resources to enforce.
- Wintering ground counts report 9,000+ Hooded Cranes, but only 60 breeding pairs have been recorded worldwide, 30 were recorded in China.
- The Hooded Crane is ´Vulnerable´ on the IUCN Red List and on Appendix I and II of CITES. The endangered species Blakiston´s Fish Owl, as well as bear, moose and sable share Hooded Crane habitat.
